Plot:
The story is set in ancient India and Nepal. Siddhartha decides to leave his home and become a wanderer to seek spiritual enlightenment. His father, a Brahmin, didn’t allow him, but he realized that Siddhartha really wanted to venture into the world. His best friend, Govinda, joins him, too. They give up their possessions and meditate. Siddhartha meets Gautama, the Buddha, and appreciates his teachings. Govinda joins the Buddha’s order, but Siddhartha believes that everyone’s experiences are unique and seeks his path. Siddhartha crosses a river and meets Kamala, a beautiful courtesan. She tells him to become wealthy to win her love and teaches him about love. Siddhartha agrees and becomes successful working for a businessman named Kamaswami. However, he realizes that his rich lifestyle doesn’t bring him true happiness and leaves the city. He returns to the river, feeling tired and unhappy, even considering suicide. However, he has a spiritual experience and is saved. The next day, Siddhartha meets Govinda and decides to live by the river. He reunites with the ferryman Vasudeva and learns from the river’s messages. Years later, Kamala, now a Buddhist, dies near the river, and Siddhartha realizes the boy with her is his son. The boy runs away, and Vasudeva advises Siddhartha to let him find his path. Siddhartha listens to the river, understands time is an illusion, and feels fulfilled. Vasudeva leaves, and Siddhartha is at peace but alone. Govinda visits Siddhartha, who is now old and wise. Siddhartha explains that every true statement has an opposite, and people should see the world as complete. Govinda kisses Siddhartha’s forehead and has visions of timelessness. Siddhartha finds enlightenment and understands the circle of life when he becomes a father and his son leaves him.
Analysis:
This novel is based on the story of Siddharta and is a story about spiritual journey. Siddharta went through these processes to attain enlightenment and get an idea of the world. The story shows how you have to go through certain things in order to seek enlightenment and understanding but not through logical methods. Everything that happened to Siddhartha, including dangers and distractions, is an important aspect of understanding. Another crucial detail you might have noticed is that Siddhartha didn’t follow Gotama (Gautama Buddha) even though his friend, Govinda followed him. Siddhartha went on his own way but was also inspired by Gotama’s teachings. You can see that Siddhartha took Gotama and his teachings as an example of life and followed his way. This shows that Siddhartha is a great role model for us who try to find his own way to find what he was looking for. At that time, India had Hinduism over most of the country. Siddhartha’s father is a Brahmin, which is at the top of the Hindu caste system. This shows that Siddhartha was a Hindu but now he is a Buddhist.
Conclusion:
Siddharta is a classic spiritual novel by Hermann Hesse. It is about Siddharta Gautama’s journey to attain enlightenment and spread the teachings of the Buddha. He ventured into the world to seek enlightenment and understanding. He finally reached enlightenment and an understanding of reincarnation (the circle of life). He is an incredible protagonist who found his way of attaining enlightenment by using his role model’s example.
