10 Things I Hate About Pinky is a romance novel by Sandhya Menon, published in 2020. It follows the main character and protagonist, Pinky, who is independent and has a unique character and personality. Samir, another protagonist, is a perfect student and the son of a sick mother. When Pinky gets reproached for dating, she manages to ask Samir to be her fake boyfriend. However, they have conflicts for their different perspectives and end up breaking their promise. They then realize their true feelings for each other and end up getting back together.

Analysis:

Pinky and Samir have contrasting perspectives on the world, as seen in the book. Samir emphasizes and prioritizes studies and ethics. He goes by the common rules of life, being respectful and obeying orders. However, Pinky is a hot-tempered, disobedient girl with streaks of different colors on her hair. She is passionate about boyfriends and love life rather than focusing on her academics. These differences are the center of their conflicts, and without communicating with each other about this, they just build up each other’s flaws, which leads to a break in their fake relationship. Another difference they have is parental environment. While Pinky is known to have strict parents who genuinely care about her, Samir has a sick mother who can’t care for him every single time. This also contributes to the contrast in their perspective because Pinky takes having that kind of parents as a must rather than an advantage and benefit. These contrasts develop themes in this book, such as gratitude and love. She is shown as not grateful for what she has, compared to Samir. The book also introduces Pinky’s friend, Dolly, who is in conflict with her “boyfriend,” who is aggressive and manipulative. Pinky and Samir help Dolly protect herself from him. Another friend portrayed in this story is Ashish, who is both a friend of Pinky and Samir. However, he doesn’t play a lot of significant roles throughout the book, as shown in the end. One of the symbols is the poem that Samir wrote about Pinky, “10 Things I Love About Pinky”. This is one of the catalysts for Samir’s feelings towards Pinky changing. One of the scenes illustrates Samir writing ten things he hates about Pinky, and this contrasts tremendously with the last poem.
