Plot:
The book starts in New York with Emika Chen, a rainbow-haired bounty hunter. She starts in the book, looking for money for she was piled with debts. She desperately needed money, depending on many jobs. However, when she can’t find a job to get money so that she can live in her apartment, she goes online to watch the annual game of Warcross. She goes to the game with her friend to watch. She ends up hacking the game to steal a rare power-up to earn a lot of money. However, she ends up getting caught by the security even with her skills and she gets infamous in one night. The next day, she gets a call from the creator of the Games, Hideo Tanaka, who invites her to see him in Tokyo. When she visited him, he gave her a mission, a mission to save the Games and himself. Someone named Zero had been threatening him on the matter of the Games and to himself. Hideo told Erika that he believed that Zero was in the championship game. He puts her in the Phoenix Riders Team as an architect where she meets Asher, Ren, Roshan, and Hammie. She would find information about Zero and threatening messages he leaves to Hideo. She reports to Hideo on it and the information she found to Hideo. While doing so, they both developed feelings for each other, growing their relationship. Meanwhile, she follows Ren into the Dark World but can’t see anything except Zero. Back in the game, someone tries to shoot Hideo but one of his bodyguards got shot instead. She tells Hideo to leave the town but he refuses to protect himself. In their next game, she follows Ren and meets Zero who knows that she is following him. Zero exposes her and Hideo which leads to him taking her off the team. Hideo and Emika depart from each other.
Analysis:
Emika clearly shows her talent: computing and coding. She shows certainty in what she loves doing. The author didn’t show a big impact on her father. From the book, it can be inferred that he cherishes her but doesn’t provide a lot for her. Also, the book doesn’t tell a lot about Ren and his connection with Zero. The book shows the scene where Ren leads Emika to Zero, which tells that there is something between Ren and Zero. They are either accomplices or partners. Another thought is the reaction of the team when Emika tells them about it. They might react differently according to their personalities. A few examples are they can be surprised or mad. Hideo and Emika also have different personalities. Emika is more straightforward and brave while Hideo is more defensive. This shows their argument reasons for they had different thoughts on how to protect Hideo. The author talks about the importance of money and jobs. In the beginning, she shows how having debt can lead to inconveniences, as shown through Emika’s situation. She also shows jobs as Emika gets hired to find out information about Zero who is threatening Hideo. She also portrays both of their connections to each other through how she ended up in the end. She ends up getting the money by efficiently completing her tasks.
