The Flower and the Father

One day, a humble man in his thirties found out his daughter was sick. He called every doctor in the nation, trying desperately to find a cure. Every doctor that tried to cure his daughter couldn’t define the disease she had, and the medicine they gave her didn’t work. Giving up, the doctors told him the only cure that could work was the adlanary. They described the shape of the flower as dazzling and shiny in daytime and glowing at night. It had five leaf-like petals surrounding the middle of the flower. However, they didn’t know the location of the flower, nor did it provide absolute certainty of completely curing the daughter.

There was once a flower. Dazzling like a gem, fragrant like rose and mix of fruits. This flower was a myth known to many among the nations. It was known for having and giving many powers, such as healing, transportation, time travel, and more. Everyone tried to find it for over a century. Especially people who wanted to be cured, or wanted to become sorcerers, tried to find the flower. This flower was called the adlanary.

Unfortunately, the flower was still the man’s only hope to cure his daughter. The next day, he embarked on a journey to find it.

He went along the roads using the maps the doctors had given him. They didn’t know the specific location either, but luckily, they knew the area he should search. The man went as far as the middle of the forest, the cliffs, the highest peak in the country. He circled the area until he found a weird light in the middle of the night. He slowly approached the light with cautious steps. He lifted the leaves covering the light. He jumped back and landed on the ground.

He was surprised. After one month of circling around the area, he’d finally found what he was looking for, the adlanary.

He stared at the flower for what could have been an hour. He was mesmerized by its beauty and its lights. When he got into his right mind, he slowly reached out his hand to grab the base of the flower. He also grabbed a small shovel to scoop the roots up carefully. He then grabbed the remainder of the flower and safely put it into a box he’d brought.

He let out a big sigh of relief. After all, he’d found the one flower that everybody was looking for. Then, he remembered its powers and what the doctors had said about the flower. Each petal of the flower contained different powers, but they were not not selective. There wasn’t any way to figure out which petal would carry which power.

He couldn’t stop admiring the flower. He wanted to try all of the petals…

He suddenly snapped back to his old self. He realized he’d been acting strange. Then again, it was as if he was fascinated by the petals. He wanted so badly to take one of the petals off and eat it.

He slowly lifted his hand toward the flower. Then, he pulled his hand back. He closed his eyes and thought again. He knew this was wrong, yet he wanted to eat just one petal.

He inhaled and exhaled, hoping this would help him to resist the strange forces. He opened his eyes again and stared at the flower once more. He quickly picked one of the petals and put it in his mouth. He swallowed the petal before he could change his mind.

He realized what he had done. He was terrified. Then, he realized the flower was supposed to give powers to anyone who consumed it. In relief, he walked toward home.

He looked up at the sky. It was dark and cloudy. He decided to spend a night in one of the cabins near the forest.

The next day, he woke up from a nightmare. He walked sleepily toward the table where he’d carefully put the adlanary the night before. Then, all of his sleepiness was gone. The flower was gone, too! He calmed himself and looked everywhere in the cabin. He looked in the bathroom, the closet, under the bed, desk drawers, and on the shelves. But it was nowhere to be found.

He opened a window for fresh air. He was devastated that he’d lost the only cure for his daughter. The weather outside was cloudy, as if it empathized with him. He looked around and saw something dazzling.

What could it be? The door creaked as he threw it open. He was horrified by what he saw outside—a giant black and red shimmering flower with exactly four petals.

The man stepped back slowly, as if to go back inside the cabin. The flower was humongous, towering over him like a giant. It chased him inside the house, like a floating spirit. He locked himself in the bathroom, relieved. Then, he saw a small black and red gas coming through the door frame and the lock hole. He hid himself in the bathtub, trying to fit his burly body into a small space. His eyes widened as the flower came closer and closer. Then, all he saw was pitch darkness.
